Research and Scholarship

Dr. Liping Qiu, together with his research group, study phenomena related to the water and wastewater treatment. Our work is focused on the theory and technology of water and wastewater treatment, technique of wastewater reuse and resource recovery, water pollution control planning and building water system. Relevant research areas include: environmental, biological, ecological, infrastructure, sustainable development and energy generation.

Our group has current pursued innovative research on interactions between microorganisms and surfaces; microbial attachment and transport through porous media; microbial kinetics applied to remediation of environmental contaminants and treatment of waste streams; preventing pollution from industrial activities and advancing water treatment technologies; modification and use of biomaterials in water and wastewater treatment process; industrial waste reclamation process technologies for value-added resources; and, developing materials with novel properties for water treatment applications.

National and provincial agencies that have supported our research efforts include the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MSTC); Shandong Province Natural Science Foundation(SPNSF); Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province(DSTSP); Jinan Science and Technology Bureau(JSTB); Shandong Provincial Education Department(SPED) and China National Petroleum Corporation( CNPC) .

Dr. Liping Qiu has authored 52 publications in refereed journals, 20 refereed conference papers, 3 book contributions, and given numerous invited lectures, keynote addresses and presentations.  A former UJN Young Science and Technology Award recipient, in 2013 Qiu received the Science and Technology Award from China General Chamber of Commerce for his significant contributions to the understanding and application of BAF. During the fall semester of 2009 Qiu was Visiting Scholar in the department of civil, Environmental and ocean engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology. Before joining UJN in 2013, Qiu served as lecture and associate professor in Liaoning Institute of Science and Technology for 7 years.

Teaching and Service

Dr. Liping Qiu teaches courses in Water Quality Engineering, Biology in Water Treatment, Planning and Design of Water and Wastewater Treatment and Pipe system. In 2010 he was awarded as an excellent course responsible person by Shandong Provincial Education Department. He has guided 10 M.S. theses to completion. Presently, he is advising nine M.S. students, served on the editorial board of Journal of University of Jinan, the Board Member of Industrial Water and Wastewater Committee, China Society of Civil Engineering, Science and Technology Referee Committee of Shandong Province, and the Board Member of Referee Committee of Health Production, Shandong Province.
