“Fasten the First Button” --the UJN Held a Series of Lectures on “Adaptability of College Career”

In order to help freshmen adapt to college life quickly, prepare for changing roles, improve their career adaptability, and awaken their awareness of career planning, the UJN, from September 10th to 14th, had held five series of lectures on “adaptability of college career” for freshmen of Grade 2020. The event was hosted by the Student Work Department (Division) of the Party Committee of the UJN and organized by the Student Career Development Guidance Center. It was conducted by online live broadcast. Five excellent career tutors and excellent student representatives were invited to share their experiences and development paths online, which received enthusiastic responses from the students. The total number of views reached 11,708 and discussions reached 779.

College is the key stage for students’ life, and the jointing and booting stage on their way to growth. For new students who are about to enter their college career, it is particularly important to take the first step into college. In these lectures, five guests, from different aspects, with their professional knowledge and their own growth experiences, shared “how to spend four years effectively in university” with freshmen of Grade 2020. Liu Anxin, a 2017 student of the School of Mathematical Sciences and a winner of the Song Jian Scholarship, shared his experience in learning and self-disciplining, effective time management and improving learning efficiency; Zhang Yuening, chairman of the sixth career development association of the UJN, from aspects of students’ work and social practice, told students how to train themselves and carry out effective social practices in students’ organizations during college years; Amy, the head of human resources of the world’s top 500 central enterprises and senior career planner, suggested that students should actively explore so as to cultivate their professional skills and transferability from the view of a professional HR; Liu Ziqiao, the president of the 2013 Student Union of the College of Liberal Arts and an outstanding national tax official in Qingdao, shared the balance of study, work and life. He believed that knowing ourselves was the premise of making reasonable plans and choices; Yin Xin, counselor of the College of Water Resources and Environment, answered students about how to discover their interests and specialties through Holland’s professional interest theory, so as to win the university and the future together. The sharing from five guests was simple but profound and unique, showing the appearance and core of the university in many aspects, which gave our students a vivid first lesson.

Standing at the doorway of university life, the freshmen are full of expectation and excitement, as well as novelty and confusion. After listening to the sharing of five guests, they actively raised their own doubts with a preliminary understanding of the university: How to take various exams and competitions? How to enrich my extracurricular life? How can I join a student organization? How to cultivate professional interests? In response to our students’ questions, two career tutors and three senior brothers and sisters answered questions for freshmen of Grade 2020 online, and encouraged them to find their own interests and develop their growth paths through continuous trials, cultivate their professional skills through unceasing learning, and take every step of their lives through unremitting struggle.

“A good digger starts from a three-inch well to get to the depth of thousand-feet”. The new students entering the university are just like the “three-inch well”, and four years of the university life is a process of continuous deep digging. Everyone has the same starting point, but “how to dig” determines whether they can reach the “depth of thousand-feet”. This event, focused on the adaptability of freshmen, through the power of career tutors and peer role models, aims to inspire students to realize “how to dig”, helps them quickly adapt to college life, and enhances their self-awareness and college cognition, and thus awakens their awareness of career planning, fastens the first button, takes the first step in college, becomes the master of their own college career, and makes unremitting efforts and keeps growing in the best years of youth.
