School of Medicine and Life Sciences
The School of Medicine and Life Sciences is an excellent representation of combining education with research in terms of its organization and running. Its establishment resulted from the years of joint efforts of the University of Jinan and the Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS). It was open in the year of 2007, yet its initiation of medical education dates back to the year of 1979 when SAMS enrolled its first batch of master's degree students. Now the school is managed jointly by the University of Jinan and SAMS, with heavy funding from SAMS and sustainable academic supports from the research centers and clinical hospitals of SAMS.
The School offers Master's Programs in 39 specializations that cover four major fields of medicine: Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Science. In 2014, the School is launching its PhD Program in the field of Clinical Medicine. Since 2007 the School has been offering Bachelor's Programs in Pharmaceutical Science, Biotechnology, and Pharmaceutical Engineering. More programs will be developed at the bachelor's level in the coming years at the School.
Apart from the common resources that the University of Jinan provides, the School also has access to particular resources that SAMS possess in relation to its funding, teaching and research. SAMS was founded in 1958 as a research institution under the leadership of the Shandong Provincial Government. It consists of 13 research institutes whose scientific work covers various fields of medicine. SAMS also has 8 specialized hospitals that provide clinical services to local residents throughout the province. Supports from the SAMS research institutes and clinical hospitals make the School's management and teaching characterized by a robust combination of academic and research strengths.
The School is located at Zhangqiu, a county level city under Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province. Sitting in the east suburbs of Jinan, the School enjoys beautiful surrounding environment in addition to its brand new buildings and facilities. The present Dean of the School is Prof. Lixin Xie, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The present Director of the School's Academic Degree Committee is Prof. Jinming Yu, also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
